Imagine you’re listening to your favorite song. Everything is unfolding exactly as you expected. The melody is familiar, the rhythm feels comfortable, and you already know what’s coming next. Then, suddenly, the music takes an unexpected turn. For some reason… it sounds even better?
But why? If our brains like making predictions, wouldn’t it make more sense for us to enjoy music that’s completely predictable? Surprisingly, that’s not what researchers have found.
Before we take a look at the studies, let’s first understand what a prediction actually is.
Every second you listen to music, your brain is building expectations about what should happen next. Based on everything you’ve heard so far, it predicts the next beat, the next note, the next chord, and even the next phrase. Sometimes those predictions are correct. Other times, the composer throws in an unexpected twist. These unexpected moments are called prediction errors. While the name sounds negative, prediction errors aren’t necessarily mistakes. They’re simply moments when reality differs from what your brain expected.
So why would that feel good?
This study helped me be able to answer that question. Researchers investigated how two different factors: uncertainty and surprise, work together to shape musical enjoyment. Uncertainty describes how confident your brain is about what will happen next. Surprise describes how different the actual outcome is from your expectation. Interestingly, the researchers discovered that the most pleasurable musical moments weren’t completely predictable or completely random. Instead, listeners enjoyed music that struck a balance between the two. A surprising chord was especially enjoyable when listeners felt confident about what they expected to hear. Likewise, when the music was already very uncertain, smaller surprises often felt more satisfying. Brain imaging revealed that these musical surprises activated several important brain regions, including the auditory cortex, the amygdala, and the hippocampus, which are areas involved in hearing, emotion, and memory. Essentially, the brain doesn’t only enjoy being correct, it also enjoys having its expectations challenged to a certain degree.
Do our brains learn to enjoy new music over time?
This study shows how our brains learn to enjoy new music over time. Researchers created completely unfamiliar melodies using a musical scale that participants had never heard before. Since these melodies didn’t belong to any existing musical culture, listeners couldn’t rely on previous experience to predict what would happen next. As participants listened repeatedly, something fascinating happened. The brain gradually learned the patterns, predictions became more accurate, and people began liking the melodies more. Functional MRI scans also showed stronger communication between auditory brain regions and areas involved in reward as participants learned these new musical structures. In other words, musical enjoyment developed as the brain learned to predict the new melodies.
This might explain why a song you didn’t enjoy the first time can eventually become one of your favorites.At first, your brain doesn’t know what to expect. But after hearing it several times, it begins recognizing patterns, making successful predictions, and finding those occasional surprises even more rewarding.
Ultimately, these studies suggest that musical pleasure isn’t just about beautiful melodies or catchy rhythms. It’s about finding the perfect balance between expectation and surprise. Too much predictability becomes boring. Too much randomness becomes confusing. Somewhere in the middle lies the “sweet spot” where the brain is constantly learning, adapting, and being rewarded for doing so.
So the next time a song gives you chills because of an unexpected chord progression or a surprising key change, remember that it isn’t just the music you’re enjoying – it’s your brain celebrating the moment when its predictions were challenged in exactly the right way.
